Long Island is the largest island in the continental United States .Extending approximately 118 miles and twenty miles at its widest point .It the most gorgeous. It is also the most populated island in the U.S. and ranks 17th in the world.
The East End of the island is made up of two forks. The North Fork is approximately 28 miles long; terminating around Orient Point. The southern is approximately 44 miles long - terminating at Montauk Point.
The Native American name for the island is “Paumonauk”, which means “fish-shaped" island. Today many Native American place names are a reminder of Long Island's original residents.
